På en pressekonferanse sendt direkte fra Beverly Hills i januar kom det frem at ingen norske filmer var blitt nominert til årets Oscar-utdeling.

Blant de norske kandidatene var kortdokumentaren «Kayayo» og filmen «Thelma». Thelma ble ikke kortlistet til kategorien «Beste fremmedspråklige film», men det gjorde filmmusikken, som var laget av den norske komponisten Ola Fløttum.
Svensk Oscar-håp
Den svenske filmen «The Square» ble derimot nominert til «Beste utenlandske film». Filmen er regissert av Ruben Östlund, og har skuespillere som Elisabeth Moss og Dominic West i hovedrollene.
