_________________________ National Tobacco Company | Napier, New Zealand | 1931 • • The Rothman Building, also known as the National Tobacco Company, is regarded as one of Napier’s most elegant commercial buildings • • Designed by J.A. Louis Hay after the 1931 earthquake that destroyed Napier for German tobacco tycoon, Gerhard Husheer who had founded his company in 1922 • • Despite the quick and economical rebuilding that took over Napier, Husheer spared no expense for his new building, demanding original plans sent by Hay to be more elaborate and fancy • • The resulting design mixes Art Deco geometry with Art Nouveau ornamentation as the building is comprised of rectangular forms that recede from the arched entrance. Bringing some native New Zealand influence to the predominantly European design, Raupo bullrush roses have been carved into the entrance and the sides of the building • • This process of using simple geometric forms then enlivened with applied decoration gives reference to Joseph Maria Olbrich's Secession Hall Building in Vienna. Additionally the implementation of native Raupo and roses for the decorative forms indicates Hay was aware of the work by Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Henri Sullivan whereby applied decoration was integrated with regional characteristics • • Between 1956 and 2001 the building was purchased and owned by Rothmans of Pall Mall and subsequently known as the Rothmans Building. During this period the building fell into some disrepair but the current owners 'Big Save Furniture' have restored it to original condition and allow public access to the front rooms during business hours • • Know more? _________________________ Boca Raton Resort | Boca Raton, Florida | c. 1926 • • The Boca Raton Resort & Club, opened February 6, 1926 as the ‘Cloister Inn’, it is a large resort and membership-based club located in Boca Raton, Florida • • The site was originally designed by California-born architect, Addison Mizner who began to plan the area as a major resort destination throughout the Florida land boom of the 1920s • • When the real estate bubble's following economic depression ended, Philadelphia utility millionaire Clarence H. Geist purchased the inn via an auction in 1927, and expanded it into the 'Boca Raton Club’. Architectural firm, Schultze and Weaver doubled the inn's size and added a cabana club • • Subsequently, the U.S. Army used the club as barracks during World War II. Touted by officials as "the most elegant barracks in history," it housed soldiers during the Boca Raton Army Air Field's operation • • Within post-war times, the Club's ownership and ultimately name were changed. The Schine family purchased the club in 1944, renaming it the Boca Hotel and Club • • Then in 1969, the Boca Raton Club Tower was opened. The building is still considerably taller than any other building in southern Palm Beach County. In addition, its famous "Boca pink" color has made it more famous than its stature of 300 feet (ninety-one meters) and twenty-seven floors and it is commonly referred to as the "pink hotel" • • Know more? _________________________ Central Fire Station | Marfa, Texas | c. 1938 • • The Marfa Central Fire Station and annex was built in 1938 and houses the entire 17-member Marfa Volunteer Fire Department across from the Presidio County Courthouse in downtown Marfa, Texas • • The City of Marfa established the MVFD in early 1900s but according to a 1938 article in the Big Bend Sentinel, many of the department records were lost or misplaced • • While most of the department’s history is now based on memory, it was founded in 1905 with 10 men - Walter Wilcox was the first fire chief • • The department became incorporated in the mid-1990s, meaning it is a separate entity managed by its members and board of directors - which helps to secure grants. The department is not technically owned by the county or the city, however they serve both political subdivisions • • The town of Marfa was founded in the early 1880s as a railroad water stop. It was named at the suggestion of the wife of a railroad executive, although some historians have hypothesized that the name came from a character in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamazov • • Know more?
